Tour Description

Join a beloved winter tradition and celebrate like a local!

When winter feels like it is taking too long leaving, sometimes we want to take things into our own hands. Wouldn’t it be nice to banish winter so spring can come? If you travel to the Matsudai Winter Festival, you can do exactly that!

Every year towards the beginning of March, local people come together to drive the Winter Shogun (or ruler) away; the Matsushiro region of Matsudai has some of the heaviest snowfall in all of Japan, so it’s going to take a lot of effort to get him to leave! Therefore, locals hold a huge festival with all sorts of noise (as well as an ironman race) to scare him off! The festival (located in the city of Tokamichi) features:

  • delicious street food and drinks
  • performance dances in the snow
  • a fireworks display
  • traditional games
  • children’s activities
  • locally-made souvenirs
  • … and much more!

You can also find men dressed in warrior garb as they defend the town from the Winter Shogun; it truly feels like you are transported back to the Sengoku Period.

Step back in time with us and celebrate the coming of spring with the traditions and joys you can only find in Japan!
